Lead sizes: The most common sizes range from very fine, 0.3mm to 0.9mm, which is good for sketching. The ‘lead’ is not lead but graphite and clay which does have an environmental impact and using less of it is better for everyone. They are reusable (just refill with more lead), and because they don’t need to be sharpened, they lead to less waste. It’s a neater, more legible option than the old school options, achieving that crisp, sharp line that freshly sharpened wooden pencils only dream of.Įnvironmental considerations: Mechanic pencils are an environmentally friendly alternative to a wood pencil. They don’t need to be sharpened so your lead line is always an even, consistent line size. Mechanic pencils are great for drawing high precision lines in a variety of widths. Probably because my early purchases of them were (cheap and therefore) problematic. I am a slow convert to the mechanical pencil.
